Testosterone: we hear this word a lot, and in the health and fitness community this is even more prevalent. First thing to clarify, testosterone is NOT a single hormone, its actually a group of hormones called Androgens, or steroid hormones.
Both Male's and Female’s produce Testosterone, as it is produced mainly in the sex organs, with a small amount produced in the adrenal glands.
Everyone, especially those in the fitness community, will probably know the benefits of healthy testosterone levels. Increased bodily functions, libido, mood, and bone strength are just a few.
Testosterone isn’t a blanket term, as there are actually (3) different kinds of testosterone circulating in your blood.
-Sex Hormone binding globulin (SHBG)
-Free Testosterone * (will refer later to this)
Albumin and SHBG are proteins that bind to testosterone while Free Testosterone is not protein bound.
This is key to dissect as some males might have a high level of Testosterone but have the signs of low T, How is this?
Albumin and SHBG are not immediately available to your body, they are essentially a reserve bank of your testosterone. Free Testosterone is essentially what provides the seeable traits of testosterone
So for males and females to be able to increase their bodies ability with free testosterone, without changing their overall Testosterone levels, Free testosterone is what you want to focus on.
When having your levels checked. (Men : 9-30 ng/dl. Women: 0.3-1.9 ng/dl)
Ways to increase Free Testosterone/ Lower Bound Testosterone (There are so many common ones that we will focus on some uncommon ones) -Power Pose (As crazy as this sounds holding an alpha style power pose for 2 min, can increase levels by up to 20%)
-Fruits (I know everyone says that carbs are the devil but think about this, SHBG has been shown to decrease with high levels of insulin, growth-hormone, 1(IGF-1), androgens, prolactin, and transcortin. The glucose in fruits have been o reduce human SHBG production.
There is so much more on this subject we can go into. We encourage everyone, male and female. Do some research on your hormones. You might be shocked at what you find.
