New Delhi, INDIA 2017 / Today, I woke up. I am alive. I am healthy. I am happy. God is good.
Exactly one year ago, Yash, pictured here during a later moment, personally gifted to me a red card made of construction paper with these words written in it. At the time, I remember coming close to tearing up while reading the words of marker because I had absolutely no doubt that he fully believed in his heart every single word he wrote. This moved me. It continues to do so. It does now. Younger than 12 with a childhood filled with memories taking place on the outskirts of a slum, yet full of light and goodness. Furthermore, who was I, a Westerner, a privileged Californian, to even claim life could be rough or that my problems weren’t baseless after meeting someone like him? I mean, how could I even personally justify a negative attitude toward life when Yash, who has it so much “worse”, still chooses happiness? Chooses joy?
I finish reading the words, and I look at him. The world around me, of the kids of Grace yelling and laughing and playing and excitedly motioning for me to take their picture, goes silent. It now consists only of three things: Yash, those words, and me. I give him a hug. He hugs back. I thank him. He smiles. I stare with a look of endless questions. Of endless gratitude. He knows. The silence breaks. The moment is over. Everything rushes back. We continue forward.
Time flies by, but some moments are timeless. Thank you God for giving me this one, and thanks for sharing this one with me, Yash.
