Who was Herbert Macaulay?
Certainly one of my all-time favourite Nigerians. The great HM was just an awesome guy. Here's a snap shot of his great life: Born in 1864 to the founder of Nigeria's first secondary school, he was the grandson of the first African Anglican Bishop, an accomplished Civil Engineer, Surveyor, Architect, Violinist, Herbalist, Musician, Journalist, Diplomat, Nationalist and Politician. Founder of Nigeria's first Political Party and Defender of Native Rights and Liberties. First African to own a car in Lagos. Champion of the masses. Also known as 'Ejo ni gboro' (snake in the town), 'The Wizard of Kirsten Hall' and the 'Ghandi of West Africa'. More than 100 000 people turned out at his funeral in Lagos on Saturday May 11 1946. What a man!
