Having acquired such a fondness for traditional Piedmontese terroir and winemaking I'm admittedly skeptical contemplating Australian Nebbiolo. Joe Grilli from @primoestate has not just alleviated my preconceived notions but knocked them right out of the park!
Drawn from only 1 hectare of dry grown Nebiollo planted in Primo's lofty 'Clarendon' McLarenvale Vineyard, the wine spends 20 months in French oak barriques, 20% of which are new.
Three hours in the decanter and this wine reveals moreish texture with layer upon layer of additional complexity slowly revealing itself. Beautiful savoury bouquet and an impressive tannic structure that is elegantly integrated amidst an explosion of flavours ranging from chocolate to meaty spice.
Similar to some Barolo this is a deceptively big wine which simultaneously manages to exude so much poise and finesse. However, grown and raised in one of South Australia's most iconic regions, this Nebbiolo has developed new attributes all its own. A wonderfully unique wine, Joseph is more expressive of the region than the variety. Beautiful now but just hitting its stride. Cellar with confidence for another two decades.....easy!
