Another few dusty miniatures of old whisky releases picked up at auction. Then @w.m.cadenheads Glenlossie was part of a pair with the North Point from last week and the second one is a James MacArthur’s Glenlossie 12Yr.
I have a soft spot for Glenlossie, in particular a 17Yr from @dlaingwhisky I have at home and the 12Yr Flora and Fauna. However, whilst not well known it seems that pretty much every indie bottler has a cask on the go at the moment, and often from the same year (there is plenty of 1992 and 1997 at the moment). I’m hoping these older bottles will stand out from the crowd.
Glenlossie 12Yr - James MacArthur’s Cask 4992 - 62.4%
Nose - freshly mown grass, rooibos tea, coconut oil and a vanilla candle
Palate - Calvados, Werthers Originals, pepper. Thickens and develops into more green fruit notes. Millionaire shortbread.
Finish - Tarte Tatin, satisfyingly warming
Glenlossie-Glenlivet 17Yr - Cadenhead’s, distilled March 1978. 57%
Nose - marmalade sponge cake. Lime and chilli. Digestive biscuits. Argave
Palate - very sweet, almost artificially so. Ginger, lemon and hot sugary tea. Water cuts through it and makes it refreshing, like a mint cooler.
Finish - like the previous Glenlossie it warms into the chest, a delicate Speyside for a cold night
Overall two very good drams, the younger 12Yr just about edges it for me, although both needed a bit of time and water to get going. The 12Yr in particular has the floral Glenlossie nose, although it was more earthy than modern iterations.
