The obsessive desire to know the incomprehensible has got a physician like me entangled in the quagmire of Physics, Philosophy, and God! Modern science is obsessed with the question of creation. How did it all begin? Why do we exist? Where do we fit in the entire plan of things? Especially with the future: is all this occurring by chance, or is it predetermined? Do we have an active role in this entire creation? Can we decide where we go from here? Einstein had said, "God does not play dice". Thus, nothing happened by chance! It was predetermined. So are we just mute players in this divine game? While the creator's propensity towards gambling is yet to be determined, we certainly are far from knowing anything substantial about this infinite universe. Moreover, Einstein was not always right. #Repost @astrodaily1 ・・・ How far away is space? Closer than you might think. Space is defined as "the void that exists between celestial bodies". This void has no absolute starting point, due to the fact that our atmosphere has no firm boundary. However, an altitude of about 100 km (62 mi) is the conventional start of outer space. It is remarkable to think that in your personal vehicle, you could easily drive this distance in less than an hour. It can be an unsettling thought that our atmosphere is so incredibly thin relative to the space between planets. We owe all our lives to this minuscule film of gas that protects us from the relentless dangers of space. Understanding the size of our atmosphere should give you a new appreciation of it, and drive home the importance of protecting it. Reposted from August. Constellation Orion :Orion the Hunter appears in the winter sky, with his bow and his hunting dogs, Canis Major and Canis Minor, trailing behind him. Greek mythology tells us that Orion was known as a talented hunter. His boast that he could rid the earth of all the wild animals, however, angered the Earth goddess, Gaia. #stargazingmumbai #stargazing #astrophotography #orion #constellation #instaclick #instamaharastra #igramming_india #igcapturesclub #TPSindia #photoaddicts #shutterspeed #space #astronomy #astrophysics

@cbastronomy @the_department_of_astronomy Because gravitational lensing isn't cool enough in and of itself, there's this #sciencerocks #scienceisfun #science #gravity #astronomy #astrophysics #darkmatter #quasars #nevertoooldtolearn #Repost from @astronomypicturesdaily with @regram.app ... Most galaxies have a single nucleus -- does this galaxy have four? The strange answer leads astronomers to conclude that the nucleus of the surrounding galaxy is not even visible in this image. The central cloverleaf is rather light emitted from a background quasar. The gravitational field of the visible foreground galaxy breaks light from this distant quasar into four distinct images. The quasar must be properly aligned behind the center of a massive galaxy for a mirage like this to be evident. The general effect is known as gravitational lensing, and this specific case is known as the Einstein Cross. Stranger still, the images of the Einstein Cross vary in relative brightness, enhanced occasionally by the additional gravitational microlensing effect of specific stars in the foreground galaxy. We all have wanted a real StarGate when we first watched the movie! I did, it was my first desire when The movie ended... probably that desire is what has made me dream about this artwork. One morning I just knew what I had to do. And the adventure started! Months of technical research... and finally! I had my personal StarGate in front of me! From there I decided to share it with whoever loves flying among the stars like me! - http://www.penelopearts.com/eng/star-gate/ - #ArtMiami #Miami #stargate #stargates #artist #contemporaryart #lightbox #lightboxes #astronomy #astronomylover #astrophysics #artandsoul #artbasel #artbaselmiami #artbasel2017 #curator #gallerylife #galleryart #curatorfindme #gallerists #curatorsoftheextraordinary #travel #weareallmadeofstardust @rudolfbudja #artcollector #collector #stelle #astronomia

"I'm grateful for the night sky. For the stars. It's what inspired me to pick up a camera in the first place. I wanted to capture the river of stars that is the Milky Way. I wanted to feel that sense of wonder and capture that feeling. That's something I always strive for. 🌌 - Nikon d3300 Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8" . credit: @kevinvenkatesh . One of the most dangerous thing we teach our kids is to pray. Not only we make them believe falsely in the ineffectiveness of prayers but also give them false hopes that prayer has the power to heal. In a logical and rational society, moresoever a modern world like current times when science is at its peak, we need to speak out against the wrong notions of praying. Prayer may make people feel better momentarily but it doesn't actually affect the external world. We need to make our future generations more responsible and curious. For this we must stop prayers in schools and at homes, so that children don't pick up this useless sense of praying. And anyway, as very correctly pointed by George Carlin, would a 'god' change his 'divine plan' to accommodate any person's wishes? #science #carlsagan #cosmos #Neildegrassetyson #billnye #cosmos #universe #solarsystem #astronomy #astrophysicists #astrophysics #scienceeducator #space #nasa #isro #spacewonders #atheism #atheism #religion #rationality #logic #logic #noreligion #godisdead #godisnotgreat #antitheist

The Eskimo nebula (NGC 2392) photographed by Hubble Space telescope ******************************************** The Eskimo nebula is a planetary nebula that was discovered by William Herschel in 1787. When it is seen from Earth it resembles a person's head surrounded by a parka hood. It is a planetary nebula and the gas seen above composed the outer layers of a star that was similar to our Sun only 10,000 years ago. The inner filaments visible above are being ejected by strong wind of particles from the central star. The outer disk contains unusual light-year long orange filaments. ******************************************* #EskimoNebula #Nebula #Hubble #HubbleTelescope #Telescope #Photography #Space #Universe #Cosmos #NASA #ESA #Roscoscmos #Science #Astronomy #Cosmology #Astrophysics

By @nasa Round and round they go - then BOOM! This animation begins with the final moments of two neutron stars (the super-dense cores of exploded massive stars), whirling around each other in a galaxy 130 million light-years away. Gravitational waves (rippling disturbance in space-time, shown here as pale arcs) bleed away orbital energy, causing the stars to move closer together and merge. As the stars collide, this explosive event emits light across a series of different wavelengths - first gamma rays (magenta), then ultraviolet (violet), then visible and infrared (blue-white to red) and once the jet directed toward us expanded into our view from Earth, X-rays (blue). Our Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope witnessed this event on August 17, 2017 and we watched it unfold over multiple days with a variety of other telescopes, including the Swift spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope ( @NASAHubble), the Spitzer Space Telescope, our Chandra X-Ray Observatory ( @NASAChandraXray) and our NuSTAR mission. The detectors at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) received a gravitational wave signal just 1.7 seconds before the first light was seen by Fermi, making this the first event observed in both light and gravitational waves.
