⚠️Allergy Alert & Travel Tip 💡
In the last two years I've been diagnosed Coeliac disease (allergic to gluten) and a Shellfish allergy. Being a massive foodie with a love for bread, mussels and prawns, this was soul destroying for me!
This was the first holiday I have been on with both allergies. If I eat gluten my stomach will cramp quickly and in ill be severe pain, however with shellfish it's potentially life threatening meaning I need to carry an epi-pen.
I was extremely anxious about this trip as both Vietnam & Thailand are massively into Seafood and cook most of their dishes with fish oil containing shellfish. "Gluten-free" is also not really recognised in either country and they have minimal to no understanding of what it means.
A friend gave me a genius tip that I thought I would share with you incase it may help anyone else. I printed off multiple slips in both countries language stating my allergies and including what gluten was. This way every time I went to eat somewhere I was able to hand a slip to the server to check with the chef.
I was lucky enough that the majority of Vietnamese and Thai traditional dishes are rice based so by default they were gluten free. Most places were also able to replace their fish oils with other sauces to avoid the shellfish.
Check out some of the amazing food I was able to have including Phad Thai, Vietnamese Pho & Gluten Free Crepes 😍
