Another picture from #Rameshwaram taken two years ago.
This place had some of the bluest waters I've seen in India, and some of the strongest, fiercest winds.
I also visited a ghost town* island during this trip. The town was abandoned because of a natural calamity that occurred a few decades ago. I'd done projects and presentations trying to convince people to minimize their usage of plastic, but seeing the impact first hand, was quite something. This ghost town was covered with plastic waste. No humans have lived there for years, and yet it's become a natural dump yard for the ocean. Bottle caps and chips packets, mineral water bottles, torn plastic bags, etc, etc. it's all there deposited by the ocean. It wasn't too different from the planet Sakaar they show in the latest Thor movie. It was creepy. People are not realizing that the straw they're using for their juice or the disposable spoon or stirrer they're using every day to mix their coffee is going to remain on this planet for centuries to come.
I sometimes feel like we've already lost this war. We're getting too used to having the comfort of 'disposable' plastic items. Most of us don't even know we're in this war. We can't give up so soon. We have to be warriors.
Start with saying no to the plastic straw or stirrer offered to for your tea or juice? How about carrying a cool trendy jute bag the next time you go shopping? Or even better, stop using a plastic bag every single day to dispose your garbage? Bring back the good old dustbins. #BeAWarrior *A ghost town is a place that is abandoned
