The brink of spring is upon us and the distant bleets of new born lambs are a symphony of the coming warmth that has been absent for so long, the services of many a fox shooter will be required these coming months and just like myself will spend many an evening on overwatch rifle in hand. Tonight i headed out with my best friend for a look on one if my permissions, i try go keep on top of all my farms but when you have so many it really is a second job, walking from the old farm track and into the leading fields to a large block if 100acre woodland, the wind cuts my skin with the sting of a winters touch, spring was out of sight today and the coldness of my rifles blued steel melted into my bones. My eyes watered and my nose ran but when you are dedicated to this life you become immune to the winters poison. Though the sun shone on my back no warmth struck, all i could do was head for the woodland face down and fast paced, getting to the woods i soon realised i was not the only one hunkering from the wrath of the Cumbrian weather, a brown Hare heard me and jumped up from the remainder of some red bracken carefully accumulated by many winds long passed. Off he trotted awkward and different in his manner, i have such a soft spot for hares i find them to be such fascinating creatures a respect drummed into me from a young age when there wasn't many here. Making my way across a lightly trodden route, i came to a ravine, knowing a fox could very likely be in this wood sheltering from the weather and given the amount of damage to a dead sheep just 300yards over the field to our left he won't be far away from that food source after such a bad few days. I placed the caller out and set up the viper flex sticks, i waited and waited until i heard something coming, a small mass moving lightly through the thick cover, where on!! He emerges from the bushes cautious yet inquisitive, when you see a day time fox at work they truly are brilliant, placing my crosshairs on his bib i squeeze the trigger... CLICK!!! Would you believe that Bloody hang fire.. the round didnt go off and the fox already wary took to the wind in a flash.. It was not my day!
