#Repost @melanieguzzo ・・・ Throughout my career as a hairdresser, I have heard multitudes of people say, “my family is really disappointed that I’m not going to college” and other things in that realm. I am very fortunate to have had a family that encouraged me into the trades. However, I know many people who always wanted to do hair (or another trade) who now feel miserable and stuck in corporate jobs. Barbershops were one of the few types of businesses that survived The Great Depression. It is because we are needed! People need their hair cut. Of course some people cut their own hair...but most people in the professional world leave their hair to the experts! Doing hair is a real career. It is an industry filled with opportunity. Being in the hair industry opens doors to being an educator, working in marketing jobs specific to the industry, sales, business ownership and much more. It is an industry that encourages creativity, teamwork and customer service skills. It allows creative individuals to love their career on a daily basis. We literally make art that people want to buy everyday. My experience in the industry started as a student in a vocational school which was nearly free and I am forever grateful for that. From there I worked in salons, traveled the US and even went to Europe once to train in Paris. I had the opportunity to teach at a Paul Mitchell School, be a brand educator, do photo shoots and now I get to work with a team at Virtue. I even have a 4-year college degree but I chose to stay in the cosmetology field and I am really glad that I did 🖤 I am aware that some people think, “I don’t know what I want to do, I guess I will ‘just’ go to Hair school- it seems easy”. This is also dangerous territory. All trades require discipline and hard work and are not for people that “kind of” want to do it...I have met far too many “beauty school dropouts”. However, if you have ever dreamed of doing hair or being in the salon world. It is a REAL career. Don’t let people talk you out of it (especially if you are the one paying for it!) if it is your dream. Just go and prove them wrong 😉
