#Repost @astrodaily1 ・・・ How far away is space? Closer than you might think. Space is defined as "the void that exists between celestial bodies". This void has no absolute starting point, due to the fact that our atmosphere has no firm boundary. However, an altitude of about 100 km (62 mi) is the conventional start of outer space. It is remarkable to think that in your personal vehicle, you could easily drive this distance in less than an hour. It can be an unsettling thought that our atmosphere is so incredibly thin relative to the space between planets. We owe all our lives to this minuscule film of gas that protects us from the relentless dangers of space. Understanding the size of our atmosphere should give you a new appreciation of it, and drive home the importance of protecting it. Reposted from August. Spiral Galaxy NGC 2841 Up Close . “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” . A mere 46 million light-years distant, spiral galaxy NGC 2841 can be found in the northern constellation of Ursa Major. This sharp view of the gorgeous island universe shows off a striking yellow nucleus and galactic disk. Dust lanes, small, pink star-forming regions, and young blue star clusters are embedded in the patchy, tightly wound spiral arms. In contrast, many other spirals exhibit grand, sweeping arms with large star-forming regions. NGC 2841 has a diameter of over 150,000 light-years, even larger than our own Milky Way, but this close-up Hubble image spans about 34,000 light-years along the galaxy's inner region. X-ray images suggest that resulting winds and stellar explosions create plumes of hot gas extending into a halo around NGC 2841. © NASA (APOD) . #amazing #astronomy #beauty #chandra #bible #bibletext #nasabeyond #constellation #creation #galaxy #hubble #hubbletelescope #interstellar #nature #nasa #cosmos #hubblehangout #space #universe #scripture #naturelovers #cosmology #science #hst #oman

#repost #spacelovers This animation begins with the final moments of two neutron stars (the super-dense cores of exploded massive stars), whirling around each other in a galaxy 130 million light-years away. Gravitational waves (rippling disturbance in space-time, shown here as pale arcs) bleed away orbital energy, causing the stars to move closer together and merge. Our Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope witnessed this event on August 17, 2017 and we watched it unfold over multiple days with a variety of other telescopes, including the Swift spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope ( @NASAHubble), the Spitzer Space Telescope, our Chandra X-Ray Observatory ( @NASAChandraXray) and our NuSTAR mission. The detectors at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) received a gravitational wave signal just 1.7 seconds before the first light was seen by Fermi, making this the first event observed in both light and gravitational waves. "I'm grateful for the night sky. For the stars. It's what inspired me to pick up a camera in the first place. I wanted to capture the river of stars that is the Milky Way. I wanted to feel that sense of wonder and capture that feeling. That's something I always strive for. 🌌 - Nikon d3300 Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8" . credit: @kevinvenkatesh . The Eskimo nebula (NGC 2392) photographed by Hubble Space telescope ******************************************** The Eskimo nebula is a planetary nebula that was discovered by William Herschel in 1787. When it is seen from Earth it resembles a person's head surrounded by a parka hood. It is a planetary nebula and the gas seen above composed the outer layers of a star that was similar to our Sun only 10,000 years ago. The inner filaments visible above are being ejected by strong wind of particles from the central star. The outer disk contains unusual light-year long orange filaments. ******************************************* #EskimoNebula #Nebula #Hubble #HubbleTelescope #Telescope #Photography #Space #Universe #Cosmos #NASA #ESA #Roscoscmos #Science #Astronomy #Cosmology #Astrophysics

Several large #wildfires northwest of Los Angeles, California, can be seen in this #ProbaV image, taken on 7 December. Extensive smoke and ash plumes are transported over Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz islands and beyond to the Pacific Ocean by strong winds. By @nasa Round and round they go - then BOOM! This animation begins with the final moments of two neutron stars (the super-dense cores of exploded massive stars), whirling around each other in a galaxy 130 million light-years away. Gravitational waves (rippling disturbance in space-time, shown here as pale arcs) bleed away orbital energy, causing the stars to move closer together and merge. As the stars collide, this explosive event emits light across a series of different wavelengths - first gamma rays (magenta), then ultraviolet (violet), then visible and infrared (blue-white to red) and once the jet directed toward us expanded into our view from Earth, X-rays (blue).
