Whenever possible, shop local and support local farmers. Here's my haul from my farmer pickup today. It's smaller than usual since they're out of beef (I'll have to go to the farm near my house for that). I picked up bone broth, raw honey, raw Colby cheese, ground pork, chicken thighs, airline breasts and chicken drumsticks (for our smoker). All local, all pastured, all properly raised. More, better meat (right @sustainabledish 😉) is the name of the game. . By supporting local farmers, you can familiarize yourself with their farms and how they raise and care for their animals. And I've found the prices are often cheaper than you see in the grocery store for meat of a similar quality. My local WF sells grass fed beef (from Colorado, so not local in the least) for $9.99/lb. I get ground beef from my local farmers for between $6-8 lb (sometimes even $4 if it's on special that week). I prefer to know my food's story whenever possible. . I certainly don't buy everything I eat from local farms. I understand that sometimes that can be time intensive and depending on where you live, may not be possible depending on climate. But go to eatwild.org or google local farms in your area. Making those connections is invaluable, and you'll truly know where the food that's on your plate came from. Too often, in our current food landscape, we eat things out of boxes, packages, and to-go bags and have no idea how they were made, what resources were used, or even what is in them. By investing your money in local farms, you can support the real food movement in a truly vital way.
