The term heart failure can be frightening, but in reality, it just means that the heart is not pumping as well as it could be. When the heart muscle is weak, blood cannot be pumped efficiently enough to get oxygen to all of the cells. Sometimes the heart becomes dilated and weak. Other times it may be stiff and thickened. Over time, the heart cannot keep up with its workload. When this happens, there isn't enough oxygenated blood reaching the brain and muscles, and fluid begins to backup in the lungs and other tissues. People may experience: Pain areas: in the chest Cough: can be dry or with phlegm Whole body: dizziness, fatigue, inability to exercise, or loss of appetite Respiratory: fast breathing, shortness of breath at night, shortness of breath on exercise, or shortness of breath on lying down Gastrointestinal: water retention or bloating Also common: excess urination at night, palpitations, swollen feet, swollen legs, or weight gain. Heart failure treatment options include making healthier decisions about lifestyle and diet, taking medications, and sometimes implanting devices. Heart transplant is sometimes considered for certain individuals. In acute or decompensated heart failure, the person may need hospitalization or even intravenous medications to help recover. #instalike #instaquotes #doctor #success #medicine #medical #health #medschool #medstudent #healthcare #article #nurse #futuredoctor #family #pharmacist #wellness #prevention #treatment #university #nursestudent #doctors #medicalstudent #premedstudent #futuredoctor #mymobiledoccares

SHOULDER PAIN SERIES - IMPINGEMENT SYNDROME . Shoulder Impingement is a very common injury! . In this post we will focus on the Supraspinatus, one of our 4 rotator cuff muscles that's mostly the culprit! . The supraspinatus tendon is running through a space in between the acromion and the humeral head which we call the subacromial space. . When you move your arm up, the subacromial space becomes narrow and causes entrapment of the supraspinatus tendon (or even bursa). Impingement Syndrome then can happen causing irritation of tendon or bursa. . Doing repetitive overhead movement can aggravate your tendon making it inflamed & thickened! When it's thickened, the subacromial space will become even more narrow! As a result you get reduced range of motion, pain and potentially a supraspinatus tendon tear! . Who's at risk? Athletes who do lots of arm overhead activity (i.e. swimming, javelin, tennis, basketball) or really any activity that involves repetitive movement (i.e. construction work, wall painting)! . Symptoms: • Pain when moving overhead, lifting heavy objects, or reaching for an object • Possible swelling and tenderness in front of the shoulder • Reduced range of motion due to pain and stiffness • Weakness of rotator cuff muscles and possibly other surrounding muscles - sometimes you'll be able to see a loss of muscle bulk too on the affected side! • Pain at night (think about sleeping position) . Normally, at the early stage (when impingement is still mild), people will tend to ignore it. Usually until they have caused further injury/tear, that's the time when they will seek for treatment! . Never force yourself through pain, the pain is there for a reason! . Consult a physio if you're in doubt! They can confirm with you whether you have got impingement by doing some special tests and will guide you on a proper rehab and management! . @Regranned from @resultcare_inc - Victoria Wright was born with cherubism, a rare genetic disorder that causes an over-growth of fibrous tissue in the face. Victoria was about four years old when the first signs of cherubism appeared. "My mum was brushing my teeth and she noticed they weren't in the right place." . Cherubism, named after the chubby-cheeked, angelic figures in Renaissance art, runs in Victoria's family, although in a much milder form. It was thought that Victoria's condition would regress after puberty, but it didn't. Instead, her jaw grew larger and it began affecting her eyes. . She had surgery to relieve the pressure on her eyes, which saved her eyesight, but she still suffers from headaches due to her impaired vision. "Cherubism isn't a painless condition," she says. "I do get twinges of pain. My head is very heavy. Doctors say it's as heavy as a bowling ball. . "I've been offered surgery on my jaw to make it smaller, but I don't think it would improve my appearance," she says. "I'm used to the way I look." Victoria has been falsely portrayed in the media as being anti-cosmetic surgery because of her decision not to have the size of her jaw reduced. . She is not against surgery and says: "I'm certainly not against people with disfigurements having surgery, but I'm fine with the way I look. Why should I have the surgery for other people? . #plastic #plasticsurgery #reconstruction #amazing #beautiful #motivation #confidence #organdonor #medicine #makeover #medicine #surgery #science #face #hair #eye #natural #skin #dedication #nursing #doctor #hospital #medstudent #medicalstudent #health #healthy #recovery #facial #transplant #nevergiveup

#makemeMD ultrasound workshop 😊 I started learning ultrasound in first year but felt like the sessions were rushed and so I signed up for an extra workshop and that cleared up so much! It can be difficult to orientate yourself while using the ultrasound machine so the more practice you have the better! When do you start learning ultrasound in your university? I’m aware that not all courses offer it yet and I’m curious :)
