How do we pour humanity back into human kind?
Visual media and entertainment has found a way, and it seems so real. We watch that violent movie or news reel, and most of the time we catch a glimpse of humanity after everything settles. It's the hero and the people that show up to help the victim or victims. The end, and we move on.
I for one can honestly say being exposed to all that rage and violence has changed me. I will admit it! I have become desensitized to violence, I've lost respect and empathy for others, I've become more critical and cynical of others, and expect to see the worst in our society. All this, and I am a grown adult. What can a child be expected to feel?
I am no longer surprised by what I see on the news. Is it a coincidence that it is all tragedy after tragedy, one greater than the last. If it were less tragic - oh well, then it wasn't so bad.
Bad is bad, and good is what happens after the tragic event has ended. We are desperatly craving that humanity for the sake of our children and ourselves as we age and become hardened, yet fragile or broken inside.
I have to constantly check myself to know that you can find bliss in doing right by others. I have practiced, support and promote teaching your kids how to deal with loss and disappointment in constructive ways because life is an elemental force that is taking us on this fantastical ride of self discovery. How you deal with it, is everything.
The direction we move in is by choice, ours or someone else's. Ever noticed how that carefully thought out plan always has a kink? The element of surprise and that unforseen catch. That's life, and our mission is to deal with it while we grasp for some semblance of control.
It's physiological and psychological issues within our society, and it starts with each one of us.
Start writing the manual because our youth needs it now more than ever, and we must start shielding their eyes because it has become too much.
