Meet Vasireddy Venugopal from Hyderabad, India 🇮🇳 "My wife Indira and I are from farming families. Growing up we always helped our parents with farming. I'm a journalist and publisher by profession, and my wife works in a telecommunications company (BSNL). We have been living in Hyderabad for the past 25-30 years. However small the area, my wife and I always made sure that there was enough space for plants around us. For us, a home is complete only with trees and the life that comes with them.
Mango, lemon, guava, coconut, papaya, banana, eggplants, gourds, chillies, sorrel, drum sticks, leafy vegetables, tomatoes are some of the varieties we've been growing over the years apart from flowers, creepers and croutons. We've recently planted neem, country figs and sweet lime saplings. For us, the happiest part is sharing our small yield with people around us.
We took up a small scale community farming project during our stay in company quarters. We grew many fruits and vegetables along with some of our neighbours and distributed the yield among family and friends.
Growing our own food is one way to connect with the nature. We've regular visitors in the form of various birds, butterflies, bees, earthworms, squirrels and sometimes snakes and mongoose.
We never feel that we have enough plants. The space around our home is fully used and we're going to plan for a terrace garden now. In future, we will definitely take up full time farming in my wife's native place."
