Let’s talk about suicide. Let’s talk about how terrifying it can be to say out loud that people we love have thought about or are thinking about ending their lives. Let us mourn the beautiful lives we have lost to suicide. And for those still here fighting to survive, let’s vow to do something about it.
We are putting suicide in the hot seat. We don’t want it to be a topic behind closed doors any longer. We are admitting that this is a problem in our society. We are standing up and saying this will no longer be a secret battle that someone has to fight alone.
If we can’t talk openly about suicide we keep those struggling in the dark and isolated. Let’s get vocal about the issue even if it makes us uncomfortable. Creating an accepting, non-judgmental environment to discuss suicide may change a person’s ability to reach out for help. Out of the many reasons someone may want to end their life, let’s not let the stigma of talking about suicide be the reason we lose even one more person. Not on our watch. Not when talking about it is the least we can do.
This post is for you: If you are struggling with suicidal ideation, we beg you to please reach out. Start talking. Take that first step in helping to save your own life by letting us know you are at risk. We will listen. And we will still love you. It takes courage to live. It takes bravery to say you need help. Let us fight with you, for you, because you are worth saving.
